14 Confirmed Homicides (25 Injured)
DECEASED // SUICIDE
David KozákDavid Kozák was a 24-year-old history student at Charles University with no prior criminal record. His descent into violence appears linked to an extreme manifestation of nihilistic resentment and a desire for mass-scale notoriety, influenced by digital subcultures that glorify mass shooters. His academic interest in history seemed to inform a distorted, grandiose sense of self, leading him to choose the university as a symbolic site for his final act.
Psychological assessments post-incident highlighted a lack of genuine ideological goal; rather, the attack was a calculated exercise in mass harm, where the perpetrator aimed to maximize casualties by utilizing the structural layout of the faculty building.
Morning // Prior Homicide: Before arriving in Prague, Kozák killed his father at his home in Hostouň, setting the stage for his travel to the city.
Afternoon // The University Siege: Kozák entered the Faculty of Arts building at Charles University. He occupied a high-elevation position within the structure, utilizing long-range weaponry to target individuals in classrooms, corridors, and even those fleeing outside in the Jan Palach Square below.
Resolution: As local law enforcement breached the building, Kozák committed suicide on the balcony of the faculty building, ending the siege.
- Exhibit A (The Arsenal): Kozák possessed a significant cache of legally owned high-caliber rifles and shotguns, which were key to his ability to sustain the siege from his elevated position.
- Exhibit B (Pre-Attack Digital Footprint): Forensic investigation into his digital accounts revealed an obsession with mass casualty events, providing critical insight into his motive and planning stages.
The Charles University shooting resulted in 14 deaths, becoming the deadliest mass shooting in the history of the Czech Republic. The incident forced an immediate re-evaluation of Czech Republic firearm regulations and university campus security protocols.
The aftermath included the introduction of more stringent firearm purchase requirements and enhanced mental health screening protocols for potential gun owners. Furthermore, universities across Europe have since scrutinized their own building security—specifically regarding access controls and the hardening of high-density educational spaces against similar long-range ballistic threats.
