Mamoru TakumaMamoru Takuma was a 37-year-old former janitor with a long, documented history of severe mental illness, erratic behavior, and multiple prior criminal convictions, including assault. Takuma did not act out of a political or religious objective; rather, his actions were driven by deep-seated resentment and a desire for mass-casualty notoriety. He sought to strike at the heart of Japanese communal life—the elementary school—perceiving it as a space of pure vulnerability.
Morning // The Infiltration: Takuma entered the Ikeda Elementary School campus unimpeded. Despite his criminal history and visible instability, he utilized the school’s open-door policy to move directly into the classroom corridors.
The Execution: Armed with a large kitchen knife (deba-bocho), he initiated an indiscriminate stabbing spree. In a span of minutes, he attacked dozens of children and staff. The brutality of the attack shocked the Japanese public, as elementary schools had traditionally been viewed as inviolable sanctuaries.
